There's a film clip. I've seen it a bajillion times. It's one soldier being machinegunned to death while he tries to run to cover at Omaha beach. I'm sure he didn't sleep the night before. He was cold, motionsick, afraid, tired, all alone. On June 6, 1944, the US Army lost 6,000 personnel in Normandy France, but this one man has come to personify it all for me.
